In May 2010, the Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America (Allianz) contracted Larson Research and Strategy Consulting, Inc., and DSS Research to study changes in perceptions of American baby boomers regarding financial services products and the professionals who market them.

A representative sample of 1,642 U.S. households was surveyed. The results were published in a study titled “Reclaiming the Future.”

Allianz published a summary of their survey results in August 2011. Quoting from “The Allianz Reclaiming the Future Study White Paper,” we learn:

  • One of the most striking findings was that a majority surveyed either somewhat or absolutely agree that the U.S. is facing a retirement crisis.  
  • At 76 million strong, the "baby boom" generation represents the largest, wealthiest and most influential segment of the U.S. population.  Compared to past generations, the baby boomers have unprecedented wealth, life experiences, perspectives and attitudes that combine to give them a unique definition of "retirement." Yet, this "power generation" is facing one of the most pronounced retirement income challenges in history.

The Allianz white paper also states:

  • Americans believe that there is a retirement crisis and they are unprepared.  
  • Americans fear outliving their money more than they fear death.
  • Annuity-like solutions are gaining relevance and appeal. 
  • When asked to choose between high returns or guarantees, the majority of those surveyed chose a product that was 'guaranteed not to lose value' versus a product whose goal was providing 'high returns.'
  • According to the study, 76% of the annuity owners surveyed are happy with their purchase.  

So helping baby boomers have adequate, guaranteed retirement income solutions is important to baby boomers. It’s more than an opportunity to increase your sales. It’s a necessity if your practice is to thrive in the years ahead.
